The Pomacanthus imperator, or Orange Tail Emperor Angelfish, is a spectacular addition to any large marine aquarium. Known for its vivid blue and yellow body with a distinctive orange tail, this angelfish is a favourite among experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: This species requires advanced care due to its size and specific dietary needs. It thrives best in well-established tanks with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus imperator is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is best housed with other large, robust fish and should not be kept with small, timid species. Compatibility with other angelfish is limited, so caution is advised when mixing.
Diet: A varied diet is essential, including marine algae, sponges, and high-quality meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding supports vibrant colouration and overall health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size of up to 40 cm (16 inches), a minimum tank size of 500 litres (approximately 110 gallons) is recommended. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places.
Reef Safety: With Caution – While Pomacanthus imperator may nip at sessile invertebrates and corals, individual behaviour varies. It is generally not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
