Pomacanthus navarchus, commonly known as the Blue-girdled Angelfish or Majestic Angelfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Juveniles display a striking pattern of electric blue and yellow bands, making them a standout addition to any large marine tank.
Care Level: This species is best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus navarchus juveniles can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar angelfish species. They are generally compatible with a range of peaceful to semi-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with very small or timid fish. Providing ample hiding spots and rockwork helps reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: An omnivorous diet is essential. Offer a varied menu including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Supplementing with sponge-based foods is beneficial, reflecting their natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and territorial behaviour. The aquarium should be mature, well-filtered, and stable with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While juveniles may be reef safe initially, they can nip at corals and sessile invertebrates as they mature. Monitor behaviour closely if kept in reef systems.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in captivity.
