Chaetodon plebeius, commonly known as the Blue-spot Butterflyfish, is a small and visually striking species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This butterflyfish displays a distinctive pattern of blue spots and bands, making it a captivating addition to larger reef or fish-only tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable marine environments.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized aquarium. Compatible with other peaceful species but avoid aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Approximately 12 cm (4.7 inches).
With proper care and a stable environment, Chaetodon plebeius can thrive and become a stunning focal point in your marine aquarium.
