The Fourspot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon quadrimaculatus) is a visually captivating species prized for its bright yellow coloration and four prominent black spots. This species is native to the central Pacific and is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a colourful and active butterflyfish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks. Compatible with other peaceful fish but caution is advised with aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae and sponge-based foods to mimic natural grazing behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; suitable for reef tanks with robust corals or where careful monitoring is possible.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are recommended to replicate natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Ensure the tank is mature and stable before introduction.
Origin: Central Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
