The Fourspot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon quadrimaculatus) is a visually stunning addition to any mature marine aquarium. Recognised by its bright yellow body adorned with four distinctive black spots, this medium-sized butterflyfish adds vibrant colour and dynamic movement to reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised butterflyfish preparations to ensure nutritional balance.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres. A spacious environment with ample live rock for grazing and hiding is essential.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While the Fourspot Butterflyfish can be kept in reef tanks, it may nip at coral polyps and clam mantles, so careful monitoring is advised.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow suit this species well.
Origin: Native to the central Pacific region, including the Hawaiian Islands.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality, this butterflyfish is best suited for aquarists with some experience in marine fish care. Regular observation and maintenance will help ensure a healthy, thriving specimen.
